Think of Advent Meals as taking the rush out of December by slowing down once a week for a simple dinner with friends or family. We light an Advent candle, share a cozy meal like soup or pasta, read a brief scripture or story, and talk about what the season actually means—hope, peace, joy, and love. It’s unhurried, informal, and open to all ages.

1. What Is It?

An Advent Meal is a weekly dinner gathering held during the four weeks leading up to Christmas. It combines three basic elements:

  • Shared Food: A simple, low-prep meal (like chili, baked ziti, or potluck style).

  • The Wreath & Lighting: Lighting the week’s Advent candle (Hope, Peace, Joy, or Salvation/Love) at the center of the table.

  • Short Liturgy & Conversation: A 5-minute story or scripture reading followed by one or two guided reflection questions for kids and adults.

It is not a formal church service or a heavy theology lecture; it is a warm table fellowship where faith and everyday life meet over food.

2. Why Should We Do It?
  • Counteracting Holiday Burnout: December often becomes a blur of shopping, rush, and stress. Advent Meals create an intentional anchor to slow down and breathe.

  • Building Real Community: Eating together breaks down barriers faster than sitting in rows at church. It builds deep, intergenerational relationships.

  • Family-Friendly Faith: It gives families with children a simple, hands-on routine (lighting candles, answering fun questions) that makes Christmas spiritually meaningful without feeling like school.

  • Radical Hospitality: It’s an easy, low-pressure way to invite neighbors, co-workers, or friends into your home who might not step foot inside a church building.

3. How Does It Work? (The 60-Minute Flow)

An Advent Meal is designed to fit easily into a busy weeknight without overwhelming the host:

  1. Welcome & Light (5 mins): Sit down, read a short verse, and light the candle for the week.

  2. Eat Together (30 mins): Enjoy food and casual catch-up conversation.

  3. Table Talk (15 mins): Discuss two simple questions—one tailored for kids and one for adults.

  4. Wrap-Up & Activity (10 mins): Close with a brief prayer, a song verse, or a simple action (like adding a prayer card to a bowl).

4. When Does It Happen?
  • Frequency: Once a week for the 4 weeks of Advent.

  • Best Days: Sunday evenings are traditional, but any recurring weeknight (e.g., Wednesday or Thursday from 6:00 to 7:00 PM) works great.

  • Duration: Keep it strictly to 60 minutes so families with young kids or busy schedules can reliably attend.

5. Where Does It Take Place?
  • In Homes: Rotating between small group members' dining rooms or living rooms.

  • In Gathering Spaces: A clubhouse, community center, or even an outdoor firepit gathering with warm drinks and food containers.
